Therapeutic & Medical Techniques

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic Massage focuses mainly on massage techniques chosen to address specific dysfunctions or pathologies. Therefore requires a detailed evaluation prior to treatment for the purpose of determining what specific pathologies are present.

Craniosacral

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. Craniosacral can help with migraine headaches, chronic head and neck pain, colic, autism, scoliosis, infantile disorders, Fibromyalgia, TMJ syndrome and many more.

Lymphatic Drainage

A gentle technique that works through the body's lymphatic system to activate the body fluid circulation and stimulate the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems. The result of these actions can include reductions in edemas, detoxification of the body, regeneration of tissue as well as many other benefits. Therapists work with flat hands, using all the fingers to simulate gentle, specific wave-like movements. It is shown that when these actions are accomplished, just some of the results can be; reduction in swelling, detoxification of the body, anti-aging effects, relief of chronic pain, reduction of symptoms of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema can be managed and greatly improved through Lymphedema Therapy. Lymphedema Therapy consists of lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, skin care, and patient specific physical therapy exercises. The basic concept of Lymphedema therapy is to maximize central lymphatic drainage. This is accomplished by opening collateral vessels to channel peripheral lymph into normally functioning lymphotomes. Compression bandaging and stockings also play a very important role in this.

Myofascial Releases

Myofascial Release is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. The theory of Myofascial Release requires an understanding of the fascial system (or connective tissue). Fascia is actually one structure that exists from head to foot without interruption. Our one-on-one therapy sessions are hands-on treatments during which our therapists use a multitude of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy.

Trigger Point Therapy

Application of slowly increasing non painful pressure over a trigger point until the tissue releases, and the tension and tenderness is dissipated.

Neuromuscular Re-Education (PNF)

This technique is retraining restricted muscles by using compression techniques to stimulate the proprioceptors within the muscles in order to eliminate the restriction within the soft tissue.

Manual Therapy

Manual Therapy techniques may include connective tissue massage, joint mobilization and manipulation, manual traction, passive range of motion, and soft tissue mobilization and manipulation.

Therapeutic Exercises

This technique is to develop strength and endurance, range of motion and flexibility to the restricted soft tissue.

Hot/Cold Packs

Moist heat refers to the hydrocollator steam pack, which is covered in a terry cloth pad to protect you the patient. This treatment increases blood flow to the affected area, which tends to speed the up the healing process by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to the injured area.

Cold Therapy, like moist heat is applied to the affected area; however, it's purpose is not increase circulation but to cause a sedative effect to the area, which can help reduce swelling caused by inflammation.

Stages of Conditions

Acute (24-48 hours)

Worsening of the condition

The goal is reduce worsening such as inflammation, swelling

Sub-Acute (up to 10 days)

Improvement has occurred but the soft tissue is still fragile

Settled (10 days-6wks)

Tissue is stable. Some healing has taken place and corrective treatments are well tolerated.

Chronic (>6 weeks, depending on the circumstances)

Phases of Healing

Inflammation

24-48 hours but can be longer due to the level of agitation. The body is attempting to control the damage

Proliferation

10-21 days but varies on the degree of injury. The body has begun the repair process but is still very unstable. Mitigation of secondary to: injuries can begin. Great care must be taken to prevent agitating the original trauma/ surgery site.

Maturation

21 days to 2 years but varies on the degree of injury. Direct treatment to the injury including light range of motion work.
